REGULAR SHOW SURFBOARD
Evan Vujovich & Daniel Ben-Zion
Done! All that’s left is clearcoat. This will be the last photo though, it’ll be too reflective to properly photograph after we’ve glossed it.
Time: About 12 hours from prelim sketch to finished product, with two people working. Total work was probably about 18-20 hours.
Process: .gif Animation of the Process
- Clean the Board! - Remove all wax. We used a wax scraper, lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol, and an assortment of cloths to do this.
- Prep for Paint! - Lightly sand the board with 150 grit sandpaper to give the paint a more porous surface to stick to.
- Sketch onto the board! - Sketched in graphite with a grid to transfer the on-paper sketch over.
- Color! - We used white acrylic paint for the hard whites, blue Permapaque for Mordecai’s body, a few wide chisel tipped Copic markers for all of Rigby and Skips’ face, and the rest of the piece was done in Prismacolor Marker. Most of the colors you see weren’t available to us so we hand-blended many of them. Ended up providing a nice watercolor effect (i.e. the background, Pops’ face, etc.). In areas where we needed to lighten color or blend a good amount, we used rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) as a solvent.
- Ink! - Black Sharpie paint marker (large barrel chisel-tip.). That’s it! White details/extra outlines were done on top for character separation in white acrylic paint.
- Border! - The outer rim and entire bottom of the board are sprayed with Montana Gold burnt orange spraypaint.
- Clearcoat! - Glossy UV-resistant (this is a surfboard! UV resistance is paramount!) clearcoat spray.
